Reims, pronounced ‘Rance’ in French, is the capital of France’s Champagne region. Champagne is the birthplace of Champagne, the renowned sparkling wine from which it takes its name. The ‘Father of Champagne,’ Dom Pérignon, was the connoisseur behind this unique blend of grapes.

Founded by the Romans, Reims played an early role in wine production for the Roman Empire. Just an hour by train from Paris, Reims is the perfect day trip to explore France’s famous Champagne region.

Reims Cathedral (Notre-Dame of Reims): The Reims Cathedral, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture, began construction in 1211 and took 80 years to complete under the direction of four different architects. It was heavily damaged during World War I but was later restored to the structure we see today. Visitors can admire its intricate architectural details, including stunning stained glass windows. It is also renowned for its long history of royal coronations, having hosted the crowning of 32 French kings. In 1991 Reims Cathedral was officially designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Explore the Palace of Tau: The Palace of Tau is connected to the Reims Cathedral and served as a residence for French kings before their coronations. The monarchs would be dressed at the palace before proceeding to the cathedral for the ceremony, followed by a grand banquet. The palace showcases a blend of Gothic and Baroque architectural styles, adding to its historical grandeur.

Visit the Saint-Remi Basilica: The Saint-Remi Basilica is the oldest church in Reims is built with a Romanesque Style and Gothic vaulting. Inside the church is the 1000 year old tomb of St. Remi, archbishop at the age of 22. The building was heavily impacted by World War 1 and eventually was restored to the basilica we know today.

Champagne Houses Tour: No trip to the Champagne region would be complete without sampling its world-renowned Champagne. Reims boasts numerous Champagne Houses, offering tastings and tours where you can experience the region’s signature sparkling wines firsthand. The top houses to check out are Veuve Clicquot, Taittinger and Moët & Chandon.

The train ride from Paris to Reims takes about 45 minutes and is the most recommended option unless you book a tour group that provides transportation while planning your day. Taking the train offers the flexibility to create your own agenda and enjoy more freedom throughout the day. Once you arrive in Reims, the city is very walkable; however, if you plan on visiting the vineyards of the Champagne Houses, you will need additional transportation.
