Best Camera Settings for Great Videos on iPhone 16 Pro

The iPhone is capable of capturing any type of video, from a quick clip of your dog to send to family and friends, to a well-crafted cinematic production. There are key settings on your iPhone that unlock advanced video capabilities. With each new iPhone, we expect advancements in these features.

In this article, we will cover three new video settings on the iPhone 16 Pro that can transform any video from basic to a cinematic masterpiece.

1. Cinematic Slow Motion

Slow motion was introduced with the iPhone 5s in 2013, while Cinematic Mode debuted with the iPhone 13 in 2021. While slow motion was fun, Cinematic Mode was groundbreaking for video creators, as it added a natural bokeh effect to videos using shallow depth of field, a technique often seen in movies. With a simple tap, filmmakers could now adjust their iPhone camera's focus while recording.

And now in 2024, Apple has introduced cinematic slow-motion. This added feature on the iPhone 16 Pro is a major plus—any time we can minimize editing is a win. With just one click, we can now capture Cinematic Mode while utilizing slow motion.
When to Use Cinematic Slow Motion:
Slow motion is often used in high-action scenes or when a filmmaker wants to create a sense of heightened anticipation or emotion. Cinematic slow motion is perfect for scenes like these, especially when you want to focus on a single object or person.

2. Shoot in 4K at 120 fps

4K on the iPhone allows users to shoot in high quality, while 120 fps enables capturing fast movements in slow motion to reveal every detail. Combining 4K with 120 fps gives filmmakers dynamic imaging while also preserving detailed movement.

Previous iPhone models only supported up to 30 fps when shooting in 4K, so the iPhone 16 Pro represents a significant leap for filmmakers. There are even greater editing capabilities; for example, if you capture a scene and realize you'd prefer it at 24 fps instead of 120, the iPhone allows you to go back and edit the already recorded scene.
When to Use 4k at 120fps:
Shooting 4K at 120 fps is perfect for capturing particles in motion, such as smoke, fire, water, or any action scene where you want to highlight quick movement in detail.

3. Cinematic Audio to Complement Cinematic Visuals

Apple's focus on improving audio for the iPhone is a new venture for the company.

The iPhone 16 Pro offers four different audio options:
  • Cinematic Mix handles audio like in movies, with on-screen sounds in front and environmental noises in the surroundings.
  • Studio Mix creates the effect of recording in a studio setting.
  • Audio Mix uses machine learning to identify and separate background audio from speech.
  • The "In-frame mix" isolates the voice of the person on camera.
An added bonus of the audio feature is that you can record a video, and in post-production, if you decide you want the studio mix instead of the cinematic mix, you can switch it.
When to Use Each Audio Mix:
  • Cinematic Mix: Perfect for capturing the essence of a scene when shooting a short film.
  • Studio Mix: Clean, clear sound is ideal for speaking directly into the camera for an interview, or podcast with the background noise muted
  • Audio Mix: Great for when you’re speaking directly into the camera in a noisy environment but still want to capture some background noise.
  • In-frame Mix: Perfect for speaking directly into the camera with subtle background noise, but the audio will only pick up what is directly in the frame, making this feature ideal for capturing unique talking scenes in a short film.
