5 iPhone In-Camera Video Transitions: Tips and Tricks
In-camera video transitions have the power to completely transform your videos. Instead of using sharp cuts between each scene, unique transitions can keep the audience engaged and offer you more creative freedom.

5 iPhone In-Camera Video Transitions
1. Zoom In + Out
To achieve this transition, zoom in on a specific object, then in the next opening scene, zoom out from either the same object or something with a similar color or texture. In the video, we used the woman’s shirt as a transition point by zooming in towards the front of her shirt and then zooming out from the back.
2. Frame Match
A frame match is when you capture a scene in one spot and cut between sequences. For example, we used a coffee drink as the focal point of the transition. The scene started with the coffee being grabbed and ended with it being placed down.
3. Sky Pan
The sky pan transition typically ends a scene by panning up to the sky and starts the next scene by panning down from the sky. In the video example, we ended the coffee scene by swiping up to the sky and began the next scene of the woman walking up the stairs by swiping down from the sky.
4. Through the Floor
The 'through the floor' transition is the counterpart to the sky pan. To create this effect, end your scene with a pan toward the floor, and begin the next scene by panning down from the ceiling, as if you fell through the floor mid-scene.
In our video example, the woman is walking up the stairs, and the next scene starts with a pan down from the ceiling as she walks in the parking garage.

5. Through the Wall
A through-the-wall transition occurs when you end a scene passing a wall and begin the next scene in the middle of the wall, panning to the right. It can be the same wall, or you can use an object like a tree for this transition as well.
In our video example, we used the same wall by following the woman from one side to the other.

Settings and App Recommendations
We recommend utilizing the Blackmagic Camera app for iPhone. It offers extensive customization, allowing users to control lens choice, shutter speed, frame rate, ISO, white balance, and more. The control panel is intuitive, making it easy to adjust settings on the go with features like grids and zebra stripes for better shooting alignment.
You can also film in different aspect ratios with clear borders visible on the screen. The app supports 10-bit Apple ProRes files up to 4K resolution, and it includes advanced features like stabilization, manual focus, and anamorphic de-squeeze for cinematic shots. Additionally, users have flexibility in post-production by shooting in Apple Log for a flat image, providing more control over color grading.

Planning Ahead
Before you begin filming, it’s important to plan ahead since all the sequences need to be connected in a specific order. Creating a storyboard beforehand will help you plan your shots and note the transitions you want to use for each scene.
Keeping your storyboard and a checklist nearby while filming is crucial to ensure you don’t miss any scenes.
